The CEMIS Research and Education Centre is a networked but close-knit organisation formed by five operators engaged in applied business-oriented research. CEMIS was established as early as 2010 to strengthen research, development and education in the field of measurement technology in the Kajaani region by uniting operators in the region under a common umbrella. All in all, the history of measurement technology development in Kajaani dates back more than 50 years.
We are a Kainuu-based operator; our physical offices are located in Kajaani and Vuokatti, Sotkamo. We provide solutions for bioeconomy, mining industry, circular economy, physical activity, and sports, as well as for the promotion of health and well-being. The themes are central to solving national and global challenges to help bring about the digital and green transition.
The fields of expertise of CEMIS operators vary, which is one of our strengths. We can implement solutions that cover measurement technology research, development of measurement equipment, utilisation of sensor technology and assessment of measurement reliability, as well as solutions needed for data management, with due consideration given to cybersecurity. We enable the utilisation of data in decision-making, including the processing of sensitive data, and utilise VR/AR technologies, data analysis and machine learning methods and, if necessary, high-performance computing, and organise training.
Regional development in Kainuu, the goals arising from the region’s strategy of smart specialisation and support for the RDI investments of business and industry provide our operations with a foundation for both national and international cooperation. The Kajaani region, or Kajaani and Sotkamo as a consortium, is one of the sixteen InnoCities that has concluded an innovation ecosystem agreement with the state for 2021–2027. In the Kajaani region, the themes of the agreement focus on data centres and smart measurements, in which CEMIS is a key implementer.
In networked activities, finding common goals, building opportunities for cooperation, and taking advantage of the diversity of the organisations involved are a key to success. In a network of diverse experts, a research partner can be found nearby, and the network provides an opportunity to work together as a research and development partner for others.
